About Sam

From an early age I showed a love for horses with “people” problems and at 14 years old, I backed my first "troubled" pony, also called Sam, who was hot headed but we worked well together, the relationship taught me that patience and kindness was the way forward.

During my university years my interest in horses blossomed and I became an active member of the university riding team and I was able to represent my university on a number of occasions. After leaving university with a BSc in Microbiology, I moved to the East of England to work as a scientist. During this time I experienced a number of approaches to horsemanship, however I found that I was questioning the approaches more and more and increasingly disagreeing with the prescribed dogmas. Consequently, I spent my time investigating alternative training methods which in turn led me to become the manager of a natural horsemanship yard.

My equine journey changed direction whilst searching for a suitable saddle for my new horse Beach who had extremely bad muscle atrophy to his back. Searching the internet for answers, I discovered the Enlightened Equitation forum and saw vast improvements in Beach's back after introducing him to the Fheonix Saddle. Looking further into the techniques discussed on the forum, I obtained a copy of “Enlightened Equitation” by Heather Moffett, learning and implementing the methods with great success, with some bewilderment as to why these methods were not being taught in all riding establishments. After much support and encouragement from my family and friends I decided to enrol in the EETT1 course and become a qualified Enlightened Equitation Trainer.

One consistent observation I have made during my time on many yards is how after a conventional lesson the students  regularly felt that they had been made to feel confused and or incapable. I too, was made to feel this way during countless lesson which I was paying for, I was even told I couldn't canter properly so why bother!

Because of these experiences, coupled with my training as an EET I hope I will have the ability to help and show people how to feel confident as well as competent with their riding skills. My aim is to bring the enjoyment back to riding for both the horse and rider enabling a true partnership to develop.

I first started riding when I was just 3 years old and have nurtured a passion about horses and their training ever since.

My equine companions have taught me a great deal and my love of teaching has always been in the background whilst being a full time scientist.
